The 1901 school complex, in the heart of the village of Muttenz, has to be considerably expanded. The proposal involves a new building that incorporates the modern school program while also entering into a respectful dialogue with the old building across the courtyard. By preserving the existing gymnasium, a structure can be realized that maintains the proportions of the existing courtyard and the surrounding green spaces.
The architecture of the new building is clearly structured and creates spaces that can be flexibly adapted. A bright ground floor opens up to the outside and leads to the classrooms and work spaces on the upper floors by means of both internal and external staircases. A new, modern gymnasium rises above the structure like a radiant lantern and offers a wide view over Muttenz. The new building will be constructed using a hybrid method that combines the warm character of wood with the strength of concrete and steel to create a harmonious whole.
