Ilge Primary school, Illgau
selected competition, 2024
The municipality of Illgau is located in Central Switzerland, nestled amid a picturesque mountain landscape. Due to its topographical orientation, Illgau is often referred to as the “Sonnenterrasse” (the “sun terrace”).
The municipality’s goal is to create a centralized learning space at the “Ilge” site. This site consists of the area occupied by the multipurpose hall and the area of the Dorfstrasse building. The existing primary school site will be closed.
The project calls for preserving most of the Dorfstrasse building and upgrading it to meet requirements regarding use and building technology. An extension will be added to the building, and the basement will be structurally connected to the multipurpose hall. In terms of its architectural expression and volumetry, the addition draws inspiration from the local houses with gabled roofs. The project embraces the character of the picturesque village houses and, drawing on this, finds its own distinctive architectural language. This is evident, among other things, in the open, glass façade and the low base. Both these characteristics and the building’s height allow the project to be perceived as a distinctive public structure within the village. By aligning with the orientation of the Dorfstrasse house and that of the multipurpose hall, the addition serves as a connecting element between the two buildings.
